Snowflower and the secret fan by L. See (Serious-Women's Lit) This was an incredible book, so deep, sad and at the same time enriching, it provides an educational insight into the world of women in 19th-century China.
If you enjoy women's lit or complain about your thighs being too fat and your boyfriend ignoring you for the soccer match read this and knock yourself in the head with it. In a world where giving birth to a woman is considered shameful, where a 6 year-old girl has her feet bound by her mother so they remain the size of 7cm (the toes curl down at the bottom of the feet to touch the heel), where a man gets to live in the outside world while a woman lives in an upstairs chamber... Whether you are a man or a woman you will cringe reading this book, and ponder at how lucky you are to be living away from these atrocities, but nonetheless what shines in this book is the amazing Lautan friendship between two girls, which despite distance, misunderstandings, and even death, will never be dissolved.
